Hello...
My name is Tom Hess. I am the Republican candidate for Iowa House District 34 in south Des Moines, Iowa.
If you are not familiar with me or my background, please read the 'About' page linked above.
Our south-side neighborhoods, the city of Des Moines. and the state of Iowa face many tough decisions in the years ahead. Changing demographics, deteriorating infrastructure, inflated government budgets, ever-expanding unfunded fiscal obligations, perplexing court decisions, and a growing sense by many that ... 'Damn it. no one is listening to us..!! ' all place unthinkable demands on the strained fabric of our families, cities, and our state of Iowa.
The main issues facing my district and fueling my campaign are...
-- Liberty ... The encroachment of government into our everyday lives must stop. From our workplaces to our classrooms to our stoplights ...enough is enough. No more restraints on lawful gun-owners. No more onerous burdens and false targets imposed on our teachers, our classrooms, our students. No more automatic cameras saying we were a split second too fast ...or too slow. No more militarized police confronting lawful citizens. The only 'more' I will support is more liberty for my constituents and more liberty for my fellow Iowa citizens.
-- Taxes and your money ... The government—federal, state, local—has no money. They only serve as temporary custodians of your money and my money. This pool of money is funded by the taxes they compel from every working citizen and business owner. It is (or should be) the sober duty of every political body spending the peoples’ money to spend it frugally and wisely. Money/taxes must not be extracted from the people in the name of “safety” (red light cameras, speeding cameras), "compassion", or "doing the right thing" without a constitutional basis.
-- Immigration ... While a national issue, the impact of illegal immigration on all these Unites States (Iowa in our instance) and our counties and communities can not be ignored. We must avow our need for no more porous borders, no more secret movement of illegal immigrants into our state, no more unfunded costs imposed on our state and its citizens. We can meet these ideals while vigorously promoting and respecting legal immigrants and their hard work while becoming true American citizens. We can meet these ideals while caring for those most in need of protection.
The time for change is now.
